Guide 01 · Measurement preparation

Measure the insert.
Keep the original facts.

A useful measurement record starts with the actual insert, its orientation and its own unique ID.

Before you pick up
the tape.

First have your local professional assess whether each insert is suitable for reuse. If it will be replaced, measure the replacement insert after it is available.

Remove the old cover and identify any batting or liner that will remain. Record the condition and retained layers. Do not squeeze the foam flat to obtain a smaller number.

  • Assign an ID to every seat and back insert.
  • Mark which edge faces the front of the furniture.
  • Choose inches or millimetres and retain that unit.
  • Record each insert, even if several appear identical.
Check whether to retain the foam

Schematic of a regular rectangular insert. Record actual measurements; the drawing is not a cutting specification.

Top view

Record front and rear width separately, then left and right depth. Keep the front edge marked in each photo and on the measurement sheet. Record any taper, rounded corners or irregularity rather than forcing it into a rectangle.

Side view

Record thickness at the edges and at the centre without compressing the insert. Note crown, permanent flattening, batting and liner. Record the available furniture frame space and any fit constraints separately.

Original units in.
Read-only conversion out.

A quick unit check

Changing the unit updates only the read-only conversion. Your original number remains the source measurement.

609.6 mm

Do not add or subtract a standard allowance yourself. The pattern maker uses the site facts, material and fit sample to determine finished cover dimensions, ease, seam allowance and tolerances.

04

Photographs that
explain the measurement.

  1. One overall photograph per insert

Show the full insert and its ID, with the front orientation visible.

  2. The ruler and the insert together

Show the tape or ruler at each measurement point, aligned straight with both ends legible. Avoid perspective that hides the scale.

  3. Thickness and retained layers

Include a side view with the ruler, plus close views of batting, liner, crown and any unusual shape.

  4. The frame and old cover

Show the insert in the furniture, available frame space, opening position and relevant construction. Old-cover seam measurements are a cross-check, not a substitute for insert facts.

Keep homeowner addresses, faces, identification plates and other unrelated information out of the photographs.

A record you can
use for the next step.

The template keeps front/rear widths, left/right depths, edge/centre thickness, retained layers and original unit together. It is a preparation sheet, not an approval to manufacture.

Initial dimensions are optional on the enquiry. If the project is suitable, the technical review will request the complete insert record and clarify missing points.
