Guide 02 · Insert assessment

Keep the cover idea.
Question the old foam.

A replacement cover makes sense only when the insert beneath it is suitable for continued use.

01

Start with someone
who can inspect it.

An on-site assessment comes before a cover specification.

Remove the old cover and have a qualified local upholstery or furniture professional inspect the insert and any batting or liner. A photograph cannot confirm internal moisture, remaining support or suitability for reuse.

Do not select a smaller cover to conceal a collapsed insert. New outdoor fabric does not restore foam support or convert old foam to quick-drying foam.

02

Three possible
next steps.

01 / Potentially reusable

Stable, supportive and dry.

The insert holds an appropriate shape, has no obvious deterioration and is considered serviceable by the on-site professional. Record any retained batting and begin individual measurements.

02 / Needs local review

Uncertain, uneven or changing.

Uneven firmness, crown, differing wear across the set, uncertain odour or unknown retained layers need further local investigation. Keep the cover specification on hold until the condition is understood.

03 / Replace before measuring

Collapsed or deteriorated.

Severe permanent collapse, crumbling or powdering, persistent moisture, suspected mould or unsuitable support call for local assessment and replacement arrangements. Measure the new insert rather than copying the worn one.

03

Inspect the whole
insert system.

Shape & support

Check edges, corners and centre. Compare the fit in the frame and note permanent depressions. Inserts from the same set may need separate decisions.

Surface & structure

Look for fragmentation, powdering, damaged liners, loose or compacted batting and other signs that the dimensions may not remain stable.

Moisture & odour

Investigate the cause locally. A new cover should not be used to hide dampness, persistent odour or suspected contamination.

Intended use

Confirm suitability for the actual seating, exposure and support needs. Any specialist performance requirement needs separate material and insert assessment.

04

Then measure
the insert that will stay.

When the on-site professional has decided which inserts can be used, assign an ID to each, mark its orientation and measure the actual retained layers. If replacement is necessary, source the new inserts locally and measure them once available.

Share the condition decision alongside photographs and measurements. The final fit must still be tested with a complete sample in the proposed material.
